Community Offshore Wind, the US joint venture between RWE Renewables and National Grid Plc (NYSE:NGG), has participated in New Jersey’s third offshore wind auction with a plan to build an up to 1.3-GW complex off the Garden State.
The proposal was submitted to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), the JV partners said on Friday.
Coming with around USD 6 billion (EUR 5.46bn) in economic benefits, the project envisages the installation of turbines that will generate electricity for more than 500,000 homes annually. The proposal, if selected, will create over 1,700 job positions and facilitate investments in the local wind tower manufacturing and energy technology development.
Community Offshore Wind acquired a 126,000-acre lease area in the New York Bight, located between New Jersey and Long Island, a year ago. Area OCS-A 0539 has the potential to accommodate around 3 GW of offshore turbines.
New Jersey’s third offshore wind solicitation has already drawn bids from Shell New Energies US LLC and EDF Renewables North America, and a partnership between Invenergy and co-developer energyRe LLC. According to media reports, another application has also been lodged but details about the proponent were not available.
