Finnish independent power producer Ilmatar Energy Oy will work on the development of an up to 350-MWp solar park project in Central Sweden set to create one of the largest photovoltaic (PV) sites in the country.
To be located in Vermland County’s Grums municipality, the solar farm will be capable of generating more than 350 GWh of electricity annually, covering the consumption of around 17,500 homes.
Ilmatar has already signed a 50-year lease agreement with landowners in Grums for a site covering 300 ha-400 ha of land. The PV panels will be mostly installed on production forest land that was damaged by bark beetles and is not suitable for other purposes.
“We are strongly committed to expanding renewable energy production in Sweden and look forward to finishing construction and connecting the farm to the main grid as soon as all permits are in place,” said Ilmatar Solar’s CEO Christian Gustafsson.
The project is expected to help meet rising demand for electricity and will support investments in the expansion of fossil-free energy. It adds to a duo of solar projects proposed by Ilmatar in the Nordic country last year – a 450-MW scheme in Tonnersjo, outside Halmstad in Halland county and a 550-MW development in the municipality of Motala in Ostergotland.
